چکیده

We present the results of a study of surface wave dispersion across the Arctic region (>60◦N) and compare the estimating group velocity maps with new maps of the body wave phases Pn and Sn. Data recorded at about 250 broadband digital stations from several global and regional networks were used to obtain Rayleigh and Love wave group velocity measurements following more than 1100 events with magnitudes Ms > 5.0 that occurred in the northern hemisphere from 1977 to 1998. These measurements were used to construct both isotropic and 2Ψ azimuthally anisotropic group velocity maps from 15 to 200 s period. As elsewhere in the world, the observed maps display the signatures of sedimentary and oceanic basins, crustal thickness variations, and upper mantle anomalies under both continents and oceans. We also present Pn and Sn maps produced from a groomed data set of travel times from the ISC and NEIC bulletins. The long period group velocity maps correlate well with Pn and Sn velocities. Finally, at long wavelengths, the estimated 2Ψ azimuthal anisotropy in Rayleigh wave group velocity correlates well with the azimuthal anisotropy in phase velocity obtained in a global scale study of Trampert and Woodhouse. Because attempts to improve the resolution to regional scales change both the amplitude and the pattern of the inferred azimuthal anisotropy, caution should be exercised in interpreting the anisotropy maps. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. 2-D Surface Wave Tomography in the Northwest Part of the Iranian Plateau

In this study, we obtained two-dimensional tomography maps of the Rayleigh wave group velocity for the northwest part of the Iranian Plateau in order to investigate the structure of the crust and the uppermost mantle of NW Iran. To do this, the local earthquake data during the period 2006-2013, recorded by the 10 broadband stations of the Iranian seismic network (INSN) were used. After the prel...

Monte-Carlo inversion for a global shear-velocity model of the crust and upper mantle

S U M M A R Y We describe a method to invert surface wave dispersion data for a model of shear velocities with uncertainties in the crust and uppermost mantle. The inversion is a multistep process, constrained by a priori information, that culminates in a Markov-chain Monte-Carlo sampling of model space to yield an ensemble of acceptable models at each spatial node. The model is radially anisot...

Structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the western United States revealed by ambient noise and earthquake tomography

[1] Ambient noise tomography and multiple plane wave earthquake tomography are new methods of surface wave analysis that yield much more highly refined information about the crust and uppermost mantle than traditional surface wave techniques. Applied together to data observed at more than 300 broadband seismic stations from the Transportable Array component of the EarthScope USArray, these meth...

Crust and upper mantle P- and S-wave delay times at Eurasian seismic stations

Median crust and upper mantle Pand S-wave delay times, based on residuals for teleseismic Pand S-wave arrival times included in the groomed ISC/NEIC database of Engdahl et al. [Bull. Seism. Soc. Am. 88 (1998) 722] are estimated as functions of time and azimuth for Eurasian seismic stations. The effects of source and lower mantle 3-D structure on the station residuals are corrected by ray tracin...

Crustal structure of the northeastern Tibetan plateau, the Ordos block and the Sichuan basin from ambient noise tomography∗

We apply ambient noise tomography to significant seismic data resources in a region including the northeastern Tibetan plateau, the Ordos block and the Sichuan basin. The seismic data come from about 160 stations of the provincial broadband digital seismograph networks of China. Ambient noise cross-correlations are performed on the data recorded between 2007 and 2009 and high quality inter-stat...
